BDCA is a community-led charity serving the residents of the vibrant but disadvantaged London Borough of Newham since 1998.
We make a lasting difference to local people’s lives by addressing root causes of poverty, tackling isolation, encouraging healthier lifestyles, promoting community cohesion and redeveloping disused spaces into meaningful community places..
Our vision
Our vision for Newham is a thriving community where everyone feels connected, valued and fulfilled!
Our mission
We work to break down barriers, bring people together and build people up.
Our motto
We work together to change lives and transform our community!
Our values
- INCLUSION: Everyone is a valued member of our community! We care for and support each other by celebrating diversity, challenging prejudice, breaking down barriers, building bridges and widening horizons.
- CELEBRATION: We adopt an attitude of thankfulness, even in the midst of life’s disappointments and challenges. We celebrate the great strengths in our community and see Newham as a place of possibility.
- EMPOWERMENT: We encourage everyone to be the best they can be. We support people to overcome the barriers which stop them fulfilling their true potential and strive to build a strong and resilient community.
Our Projects
Our current projects are:
- Community Support: supports local people in crisis through our Food Bank, Food Club, Benefits & Debt Advice, and a day centre for the homeless through our sister charity
- Children and Families: helps local families bond through play groups, trips and events and get support through advice, clothes bank, and classes
- Over 65s: improves health, wellbeing and quality of life for older people through social groups, gentle exercise, creative activities, parties and trips, and advocacy support for personal challenges.
- Young People: empowers young people by giving them opportunities to develop new skills, grow confidence, get active and reach their potential
- Sports and Fitness: provides inclusive free physical activities for people of all ages and background to stay active, connected and healthy
- Community Garden: enables diverse neighbours to reconnect with nature, make friends, grow, harvest, cook and learn about healthy food.
Our strategic objectives
From 2022 – 2027, BDCA’s new ‘Recover and Rebuild’ strategic aims are Joy, Equity, Diversity and Innovation.
