Empower Youth Newham is a project for young people aged 9-19 years old packed full of cool activities!
Our team of youth workers leads a varied weekly programme of activities and opportunities at high-quality venues across the borough, which are FREE and open to all young people in Newham.
Whether you want to play your favourite sport or try a new one at outdoor sessions; or simply chill out or get creative at one of our pizza nights, PS5 competitions of cooking and craft sessions, we have loads going on!
We have opportunities for personal development too, with tuition and study skills sessions, special workshops, and valuable volunteering and work experience.
Each year, we run a leadership development programme to help Newham’s young people boost their employability, learn new skills and develop themselves as future leaders. We typically build this programme around our children’s summer scheme, recruiting and training a team of young local people to assist us with the planning and delivery.
What’s happening?
Here’s our current schedule, including the age groups for each activity:
How do I join?
Most of our activities are drop in – so just turn up on the day. Bring your mates, or come on your own and make some new ones… whatever works for you, we hope to see you soon!
If you have a question about Empower Youth Newham or any of our activities, feel free to email us.
Our youth team
Chrispin
Working with young people has been a passion of Chrispin’s since his school days. By the age of 19, he was leading youth sessions and working with diverse groups of young people from different backgrounds and cultures. He’s worked mainly within the South East of England from Acton and Northwood to Hackney and Newham. He says he’s passionate about sports and fitness and football is his favourite sport!
Maya
Maya’s been a youth worker in North and East London for over four years and is passionate about developing ambitious opportunities for young people, and positively supporting young people from disadvantaged communities. Among the activities she runs with us, Maya has launched BMX sessions to help young people in Newham to learn a new skill while being instructed by an expert coach. Maya has performed her own poetry and spoken word in public, has tracked lemurs in a Madagascan rainforest, and was once stranded on a desert island in Swaziland!
Joseph
Joseph has over 20 years’ experience working with young people. He’s been a semi-professional footballer, an amateur boxer and has even taught Taekwondo. Born and brought up in the East End, he has also spent time living abroad and enjoys travelling, skiing and most sports – especially football. He says he’d love to travel into space and do a parachute jump. While surfing in Hawaii, he was once bitten by a shark!
This project is possible thanks to our charity partners The Renewal Programme, Community Albums, COG Cycling and funding from the London Borough of Newham, East End Community Foundation, Societe Generale and the NHS.
