Joy is one of BDCA’s strategic priorities since our community asked us to help them re-discover joy after the hardships of Covid-19 and the Cost-of-Living Crisis. Over the Christmas period, our staff and volunteers delivered opportunities for joy through a variety of events to hundreds of local residents! Volunteers at Bonny Downs Foodbank have started a weekly arts and crafts table where people can sit, colour and chat while waiting for their hot meal or a food parcel.

David Mann, Chair of Bonny Downs Community Association, received Honorary Freedom of the Borough award at the Newham Civic Award Ceremony on 5th December 2023. This is the highest award that Newham Council gives to residents (who are not former councillors) to recognise the significant contribution they have made in the borough.

Since it launched in September 2022, our Community Food Club has served 457 residents with discounted food and essentials! It was also recently featured in The Times.
Our Food Club provides an important option for people struggling with the Cost-of-Living crisis even though many of them are working. For £5 fee they receive 20 tokens to buy items they need ranging from fresh fruit and vegetables to cleaning products, which typically are worth over £20.

We are delighted to pilot a new session for women called Bhangra Fitness, led by local fitness instructor Munza. The project is thanks to funding from Boost Charitable Trust, which means the session is free for local ladies to attend!

Bonny Downs Nursery was set up as a social enterprise to help bring in money to support the wider charitable work of BDCA. Since its inception, BDCA has been working hard to attract customers to make our nursery financially stable. Some of our own staff rely on the nursery for their childcare.
